Spring 2025 = The season of refreshing + an ER visit

Spring 2025 = The season of refreshing + an ER visit

Spring is always a special time.  We all sat through the long cold winter and dreamed of getting outside, planting the garden and expanding the square footage of our homes to include outdoor spaces.  Now, it's finally here!

It's Mid-April here in northern Indiana and we've been unusually chilly for this time of year (it snowed briefly last week).  Even so, my gardener heart couldn't wait anymore.  So this weekend, with alot of help from my Jeremy, I put my winter plan into action...

  • We moved the really large and really heavy Michael Carr Aquapots into place.
  • We rented a tiller to dig up a new garden space along the fence line that's adjacent to a walking path.
  • I started more seeds.
  • At 9p, I visited the ER.

You see, I'm not just a small business owner, HR professional, chicken keeper, crafter and dog lover, but above all, I'm a Gardener.  Like so many, my garden is my place of peace.  It's where I can create to my heart's content.  It's what I dream about in the winter months.  So when the weather was agreeable this weekend, we got to work.

We picked up the really heavy tiller, got it into place on the fresh spring grass and proceeded to till it up to prep a new planting space.  What I failed to realize was that this was going to be alot harder than I thought.  The tiller was a BEAST!  Hard to handle, clay soil was disagreeable and, when trying to get it restarted at one point, thought I truly broke my wrist.  The pain as it snapped backwards was unimaginable but together we kept pushing through.

Back and forth and back and forth we took turns up and down the same row.  After a couple hours, the soil was almost where I wanted it, I was tired, and my wrist really hurt so we packed up the machine of death and took it back.

As the night progressed, the wrist hurt more and more and I finally told my husband I was going to the ER and I'd be back (did I mention my mom lives with us and she wasn't feeling the greatest that night so I asked him to stay close to her).  Thankfully our new freestanding ER was empty and I was able to get right in.  Two nurses and a doctor met me in triage and then I was right off to xray.  I learned hand/wrist xrays are super easy.  In about 30 minutes, my results showed no breaks or fractures!!  Thank You Jesus!  Tylenol and wrist wraps will be my friends for a week or so.

While I've reflected on yesterday's events (and yes, whined about the discomfort), I'm thrilled our spring projects are underway.  Hopes realized.  And I'm SO looking forward to the warm months ahead and a new garden space to play in.

Love and rolling pins,
Melissa

PS - This pictures shows the fruit of our labor.  Compost is coming next and then the fun part begins - the planting!
